Three Piece
STAG
armour

Three
piece suit.
Munitions Grade
Here is Dave Elliot wearing my "three piece suit" armour, so called
from
the three pieces in the breast plate, the back plate and
fauld.
This
armour has become a sort of South Tower Standard suit. It is
sort
of Gothic, but not fluted. It is a good all around suit for
wearing
at Ren Faires, and Dinner Theatres. The whole
suit
is fairly light compared to chain mail. I think he looks
pretty
good
in this suit....as he says in his letter to me.."I had to hammer it
to
fit in a few places, hehe, but aside from that it works great. I
really
loved the added leather bits on the chin area of the gorget. I've
taken
a few hits and it's saved me from chin bleeders more than once.
;)".
At this low price, you might want to have some extras like a coif,
or fauld in chain mail, flutings. (This one has two piece faulds for
extra
fighting strength as per client's request.)
These items are not custom,
although they ARE bespoke, that is to say, they are made to your
exact
measurements.

Even though this is the least expensive of my product line....it
features rolled edges on the neck, and under the arms, eyelets in
any
lace holes, solid copper rivets, and compound curving
throughout.
No welded seams, and all bespoke. A big guy like me (I'm the
one
with the beard in the picture) looks best in a three piece armour.
I like to pretend it is based on German examples of about 1490,
but I
hesitate to point to any period examples...the design of this
armour
has been modified from the
original so many times and in so many ways that I can only
say for
certain that it looks good and it will fit a modern North American
like
a tailored suit. It is also very adaptable....and is the
best
choice for big
and tall
people. Some have pointed out that it sort of resembles Maximillian
armour, except of course for the fluting. That was not my
intention.

Item list #1. The three piece armour includes the
following....12d1 three piece cuirass, 13b gorget, 13c spaulders,
14a1
arms, 14c4 half gauntlets, 15c
articulated legs, 15d greaves, 10g helm, all required straps
or
laces. It does NOT include custom features, gloves, boots,
gambesons,
or padding.
Two Piece
South
Tower
Armour
This two piece armour is easily the most popular of all. The
high
placquart looks good on anybody, and acts like a weight belt to
hold
everything in place during stenuous activities. Most
popular, but
NOT the most expensive, since it takes less hammertime than a
"simple"
breastplate. As in the three piece above, there are no
welded
seams here...no pop rivets, or flimsy two part sheet metal leather
rivets. All surfaces have "some" work done to the, even the
faulds have a compound curve. The wheel takes all the hammer
marks out of them, and leaves it pretty shiny. A light
sanding
will blend it all together of course. I like to think it is
based
on German
armour patterns after 1510, when
the
Italian influence took over, and the compelling but time
consuming Maxamillian
fluting was fortunately out of fashion.

Item list #2. The two piece armour includes the
following....
12c1 two piece cuirass, 13b gorget, 13c spaulders, 14a1 arms, 14c4
half gauntlets, 15c articulated legs,
15d greaves, 10g helm and assembly. It does NOT include custom
features, gloves, boots or padding.
Upgrading
Clearly the above "looks" are just
guidelines,
it is the options which make your armour uniquely yours. You choose
which
armoured legs, arms, helmets to go with your choice of body armour
and
here is where you price it all out. You have to do some hunting and
sorting,
make some tough decisions. Scale costs about the same as
chainmail,
Brig is a little cheaper, articulated elbows are prettier, buckles
can
replace laces. I
suggest
you lay it all out on paper, and fax or email me your plans.
When
I know what's in your mind's eye, I can come up with the armour of
your
dreams at a price you can live with.
Below are some suggested upgrades for
the suits as shown above. These upgrades can be done later in
the
year, or later in the decade! No problem! They are all
compatible. US dollar equivalents
are
found here...

Brigantine
Armour
Cuirass
Brigantine Armour
Brigantine armour is heavy leather, with underlying plates. I
use
bottom grain leather because I like the velvety look of the
suede. Top grain may last longer, but it is nearly twice as
expensive.
As worn by Mel Gibson in "Braveheart", this is a modified Wisby coat
of
plates with copper rivets. Leather is normally plain tan
colour
though
the Copper on black looks nice.. Ready for battle, but the addition
of
a large gorget will help a lot, and it looks great with articulated
arms
and legs.

Small Scales
Armoured
Cuirass
small scales. (click on image to enlarge)
What an amazing look! Four rivets per scale, and what....4000
scales
plus! As a result, I don't make this one much any more...the
scales
are small, professionally punched out and made into armour in my
shop.
I still use these scales in the armour, but as drapes on helms and
as
mantles,
reare braces...you know, small but pretty stuff. This is the way to
go
if you are looking to make an impression.
Price
of
small scale per square foot.....
price in effect until end of June 2010
Large Scales
Armoured
Cuirass
large scales. (click on image to enlarge)
The larger scales are really pretty! This
scale coat uses 188 scales, all hot rolled.
Every
one of which is hand cut, drilled with four holes each, and shaped
over
the anvil. No leather substrate...the scales all attach to
each
other.
This scale coat is much more affordable at (about) $550.00 US
and
includes
all leather strapping and buckles needed. I usually make these
as
custom pieces, but if you take one off the rack, so to speak, the
front
and back will overlap quite neatly, and so I can confidently state
that
in the proud military tradition, one size fits none....I mean one
size
fits all.
The simpler pieces of armour go better with
this armour than the complex ones...the single piece elbow cops and
leather
vambraces look a lot better than the articulated pieces.
Note...Lately I have taken to cutting the
scales out of scraps of steel lying around the workshop, so you can
get
an eclectic mix of 18 and 16 gauge, some slightly dented and showing
tool
marks, some hot rolled, some cold rolled. The result is a sort
of
varigated "rustic" look which is kind of interesting, and because it
uses
material which would have been sent to the recycling yard anyways,
you
get to save about 50 bucks on a full suit of scale! Lets face
it,
fifty bucks is fifty bucks! Or you can save even more by
lacing
the
scales together yourself. Check out the page on this craft by

ChainMail and
Samurai
Armour
Chain Mail and Samurai Armour (click on image to enlarge)
I also make some beautiful chain mail. In the above pic,
Jean
Valaincourt (in the red) made this fantastic Samurai Suit which he
puts
over top his chain mail. He made both the chain shirts in the
above
pic. A shirt for a big boy like me will of course run you
around
$800.00 including the sleeves, however for a slim gent like Jean,
you
can
figure on about $600.00. The Samurai suit, well, its still
undergoing
development,
but we figure we will be able to get it out to you for 300 to 400.00
(in
skinny
Canadian dollars) but YOU have to lace it all together. Add
another
hundred for the powder coating. Email me if you figure you
would
have
an interest in this armour. If there is a big interest, I'll
gear
up and have them professionally punched out, which will lower the
price
substantially! Well, thats the plan anyway....grin! As
you
can see, even plain chain mail looks good with this armour, though
of
course,
the lamellar matching stuff is more appropriate.
Chain mail is kind of
neat
in that you can put skateboard pads under the chain. It works
best
with a padded vest though. Click here
to see a pic of the padded vest I recommend, and click
here to see a pic of the gambeson. Otherwise, chain
looks
best
with single piece elbow and knee cops, does not need vambraces
on
top of it, though leather underneath is a good idea...and a big old
wide
weight belt looks best of all! I have a whole section devoted to
chain
mail, so I won't go on and on about it here.
Gambeson.........
$145.00 Can
(prices valid until January 2012)
Legal disclaimer....
Though this armour is the best that can be had,
South
Tower Armouries does not promise that any of this armour will
actually
protect you in all situations. Armour is heavy, and the
extra
weight
will put unusual pressure on joints, limbs and
vertebrae. Armour
also increases bodily inertia. Care must be taken when
re-mounting
buckles so that they don't get driven into the flesh.
Attachments
should
be designed so that the armour can be easily removed in the
event of
falling
into water or removal for ambulance workers. Armour
impedes the
body's
normal cooling mechanism, and care must be taken to prevent
both
de-hydration
and hyperthermia . And no matter how good the coverage
and no
matter
how good the armour, there always seems to be one spot which
can get
hit...so
remember,
armour doesn't make you invulnerable, it doesn't eliminate the
chances
of serious injury, it only reduces it; therefore, South
Tower
Armouring
Guild cannot be responsible for any injuries you might incur
while
using
this armour. Have it thorougly inspected by a competent
SCA,
AEMMA,
IJF, or CJA marshal before every fight,(including fight
practices)
and use common sense at all times. If an any of the
above
organization's
Marshal fails this armour, return it to South Tower for
replacement
or repair.
