#10-g
....... No Frills South Tower Helm
(Often used as a basic SCA beginner's helm)
The SCA beginner's helm. Now with most kingdoms demanding strict new standards due to the incorporation of face thrusting and alternative weapons forms, we have put in more space in front. Note that the breathing holes and chin strap are standard items. Breathing is easy in this helm, but if you want bigger breaths, no problem. In fact, we usually make them at least half inch nowadays instead of the 3/8 inch shown.
I will include a chin strap as
standard
equipment....the simplest type which is two parallel laces which tie
OUTSIDE
the helm.
(I personally think it is a VERY GOOD IDEA to be able to cut
or unbuckle a chinstrap without tilting the head back...just in case of
neck injury.) Some kingdoms may require the chin strap to be riveted
onto
the helm. The holes used for the laces in the pic above can also
be used for rivets. I will supply those rivets upon request.
This helm is made from a spun top which is nominally 12 gauge, with 14 gauge (American Wire Gauge) sides and front plate. The rivets are 3/16 inch solid steel, and are set minimum 2 inches apart. The pictured helm has an optional decorative re-enforce band pictured. Any of the spangen styles as shown in 10C on page three will serve as well, or there are some down lower on this page, look for 10i.
30 day warranty....if it doesn't fit, or even if you have decided
this
sport is not for you, return it within a month for full no nonsense, no
questions asked refund.
360 day warranty.....This helm will pass a SCA Marshalate safety
inspection
for a full year after purchase or you may return it for repairs at our
expense.
South Tower Armouring Guild will not assume ANY liability for injury which might occur while wearing one of our helms.
Helms are NOT supplied with padding.

Flip Up Visor for the Basic South Tower Helm.
The new 10g helm is much more period looking, and has plenty of room for facial padding. Since we came out with this design, we have found a couple of interesting variants on it. For instance, we have a visored design which flips the whole face up and back, here are some pics of it. This is just the "A" version of the 10-g helm above, it doesn't mean it is made from ten gauge steel! Actually, the top is about 12 gauge, and the sides and visor are made from a minimum of 14 gauge steel. And to answer your next question, "yes, I did make a "10-b" and a "10-c" helm, but they looked awful, so I discontinued them.

Warranty info on this helm.....will pass an SCA, AEMMA or JFof C Marshalate inspection for a full year from purchase or I will fix or replace it free. Note that the leather belt is considered to be a consumable item...like tires or brakes on a car. It is easily replaced by the owner, I will send a replacement belt to you with rivets upon request. Also, newer versions have extra lace holes specifically made for emergency field repairs should that big ole leather strap actually break, or the buckle become mangled. The buckle is placed on the right side of the head to minimize this eventuality, but hey, you might be fighting a bunch of southpaws!!

South Tower Designed Grill Face Norman Helm

....... Grill face helm.
Other pics of this helm...front

closeup
This helm is made by cutting an 11 gauge spun top
in half, taking out a half inch down the middle, and re-welding
it.
The face plate is made from a 12 gauge frame with 5/16 inch bars welded
1 inch apart on centre. This robust construction is necessary in
order to make a perfectly safe helm. Fighters with large heads or
those that like the extra padding may choose to have this helm made
without
the cut and weld.
12 gauge spun top with 14 gauge sides and back. Welded 5/16 inch
rods.

#10-f
....... Helm made from spinning
12 guage
(SCA combat ready)
includes all the breaths as shown, plus a very simple chin strap
(note...these chin straps are laced on....some Kingdoms require
that the chin straps be riveted on. The lace holes can function
just fine as rivet holes in such an application, and I will send
you the rivets upon request.)
This is the same helm as the 10i, but without the spangens.
This helm is not supplied with padding.
The standard leather suspension system is unsuitable for SCA
applications.
note...this helm is available with decorative spangens.

Barrel Helm, Battle Ready
SCA approved
11-c
Plain Barrel Helm, as made by basement SCA armourers everywhere!
Nice, simple, inexpensive. Very period looking, very handsome in
my opinion. Some have refered to the top as a landing pad for a
sword....little
do they know! Most sword blows come from the side, and the low
profile
allows the wearer to duck or roll with the punch (so to speak) much
more
easily than a higher profile helm. This one provides lots of
padding
for the head all around. Very popular.
The pic shows a barrel helm with a plain nasal. Clearly it cries out
for fancifying! Below are some nice ones with fancy 20 dollar
nasals...and
even grill faces!

every penny! (his words!)

A quick note on customizing.....
Any customizing is at the owner's risk, payable in advance, and the "customizing" part of the deal is non-refundable. For instance, if you got me to make you a barrel helm with 40 bucks worth of brass work, the helm and brass work must be paid for in advance. If you back out of the deal, thats fine, you get money back for your barrel helm but not for the custom stuff because after all, I DID do the work. (Unless of course, the work I did was clearly crap...in which case we all agree to throw it in the bin and start over. I don't want crap "out there" any more than you do!)
I also reserve the right to "get artistic" at my own expense, mostly
because I find that making barrel helms all day can be very
boring...
you get a chance to see it before I ship it, so if you find I made
something
you wouldn't be caught dead in, you get your chance to reject it before
getting stuck for shipping payments. I don't face rejection very
often so I guess people like my stuff. For instance all the
decoration
on the barrel helms here
here
and here
were random designs out of my head.
